When Medical Devices Are Mishandled: One Florida Familyโs Devastating Stroke Case
When hospitals and doctors use advanced life-saving devices, patients place their trustโand their livesโin their hands. But when that trust is broken due to medical negligence, the results can be catastrophic.
Thatโs exactly what happened to a Florida mother in her 30s who suffered a massive stroke after a cardiologist allegedly repositioned a heart pump without following basic safety protocols. Now, she and her family are suing for medical malpractice.
The patient was first admitted to the hospital with severe shortness of breath and heart failure. Doctors placed her on VA-ECMO, a form of life support, and inserted an Impella deviceโa mechanical pump designed to support her heart and improve blood flow. Things were looking up. She was weaned off ECMO and breathing on her own. But just hours later, her condition took a dramatic turn.
According to the lawsuit, the Impella device slipped out of position. Instead of being in the left ventricle of the heart, it was found in the aortaโa dangerous and abnormal placement. Rather than confirming the Impella’s position with imaging tools like echocardiography or fluoroscopy, as required by the deviceโs instructions, the cardiologist moved the device blindly, without proper guidance or a guidewire.
The result? The device traveled into a major artery that feeds blood to the brain. Minutes later, the woman suffered a stroke. She lost the ability to move the left side of her body and could no longer speak.
Surgeons worked quickly to remove the device and restore blood flow to her brain. But the damage had already been done. A follow-up MRI showed a large stroke in the right side of her brain, leaving her with permanent neurological damage and serious physical impairments.
This case is now at the center of a medical malpractice lawsuit in Hillsborough County, Florida.
Legal Claims: Allegations of Medical Negligence and Hospital Liability
The lawsuit includes two major claims:
Count I: Medical Negligence
The cardiologist is accused of:
Count II: Hospital Liability (Vicarious Liability)
Because the cardiologist was employed by the hospital, the hospital is also being held legally responsible for his actions during the procedure.

What This Case Teaches Us About Medical Device Misuse
This heartbreaking case highlights a critical issue in modern healthcare: the misuse of advanced medical devices like the Impella can have life-altering consequences when safety protocols are ignored.
Hospitals and medical providers must follow strict standards of careโespecially when handling powerful devices meant to support or replace vital body functions. When they donโt, and a patient is seriously harmed, they can be held accountable in a court of law.
